URBAN FANTASY REVIEW: The Skyscraper Throne 1: The City's Son - Tom Pollock

Release Date: 07/06/12

SYNOPSIS:

Hidden under the surface of everyday London is a city of monsters and miracles, where wild train spirits stampede over the tracks and glass-skinned dancers with glowing veins light the streets. When a devastating betrayal drives her from her home, graffiti artist Beth Bradley stumbles into the secret city, where she finds Filius Viae, London's ragged crown prince, just when he needs someone most. An ancient enemy has returned to the darkness under St Paul's Cathedral, bent on reigniting a centuries-old war, and Beth and Fil find themselves in a desperate race through a bizarre urban wonderland, searching for a way to save the city they both love. The City's Son is the first book of The Skyscraper Throne trilogy: a story about family, friends and monsters, and how you can't always tell which is which.

REVIEW:

To be honest if this hadn’t been part of the Jo Fletcher stable I might well have put off reading it for a little while and to be blunt that would have been a huge error on my part. It’s inventive, it brings together touches of Gaiman’s Neverwhere and of course takes the reader into a dystopian fantasy world that brims with death at every turn. It’s not light reading and whilst it is aimed at the Young Adult market its more a branch into the adult world which will appeal equally to that market as well.

Add to the darkness wonderful characters who come to life in the nigh impossible world and when backed with some solid prose, a good heaping of imagination and a no holds barred style of writing, will no doubt leave you demanding more. All in a solid read and one I really enjoyed, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next in Tom’s world.
